Glymes (glycol diethers) belong to the most powerful solvents available today.
Glymes are end capped polyethylene glycols or polypropylene glycols, such as polyglycol dimethyl ethers.
The end-capping of the glycol chain can be done with methyl-, butyl-, allyl-, and vinyl groups.
As opposed to the pure PEGs (polyethylene glycols), Glymes do not contain free hydroxyl groups. Gylcol diethers can be devided in to two groups:
- Glymes (inert special solvents)
- Reactive glycol diethers containing at least one terminal double bond (allyl or vinyl capped glycol ethers)
