Ethylene glycol dimethyl ethers

All ethylene glycol dimethyl ethers are completely miscible with water and most organic solvents. Some of the high molecular weight glymes are not miscible with high boiling aliphatic hydrocarbons.

The products Monoglyme (CAS 110-71-4), Diglyme (CAS 111-96-6), Triglyme (CAS 112-49-2) and Tetraglyme (CAS 143-24-8) are sold as pure compounds consisting only of one homologue and therefore each have their own CAS number. The Polyglycol DME types (DME = Di Methyl Ether) are mixtures of different chain lengths with a specific distribution of homologues. All Polyglycol DME types are classified as polymers and therefore have the same CAS # 24991-55-7.

Monoglyme forms azeotropic mixtures with water (10% water, bp 78.5°C), ethanol (50% ethanol, bp 77.3°C), chloroform (22% chloroform, bp. 85.7°C) and n-hexane (79% hexane, bp 67.9°C).

Diglyme forms azeotropes with water (77% water, bp 99.3°C) and phenol (62% phenol bp. 189°C)
